  • Date(s) of Absences
  • Reason for the Absence

Independent students (18 years or older) are permitted to notify the school of their own absence(s).

Students who need to leave early must report to the main office to sign out to ensure their attendance is recorded accurately. Parents / guardians of students under the age of 18 must provide verbal or written permission for the student to sign-out during instructional time.

Extended Absences

For planned absences of two weeks or more, please contact your school’s administration in advance. The administration will inform you of any form completion/documentation requirements based on the nature of the absence.

Note: Missing 10% or more of the school year (2 days a month or 18 days within a school year) can disrupt a student’s learning and academic progress.

Student absence is excused in accordance with the Education Act if:

  • the student is unable to attend due to sickness or other unavoidable cause
  • the day is recognized as a religious holiday by the student’s religious denomination
  • permitted by the CBE

Whenever possible, parents / guardians are encouraged to make every effort to limit their child’s absences. The principal has the right to request students and parents account for excessive absences.

Missed Work During Absences

Students are responsible for communicating directly with their teachers regarding absences and for making timely arrangements to complete missed work or assessments. These arrangements must be coordinated with teachers prior to known absences or promptly upon returning from an unplanned absence.

Student and Family Support

We recognize that attendance may be impacted by extenuating circumstances, including personal or health-related issues. Parents / guardians are encouraged to communicate any concerns affecting their child’s attendance with the school’s administrative or student services team. Our school is committed to partnering with parents/guardians and students to engage in collaborative problem-solving and to explore supports to promote consistent attendance.

We recognize that many factors can impact a student’s attendance, including personal or health-related issues. Parents / guardians are encouraged to inform the school of concerns affecting their child’s attendance. Our school is available to collaborate with families to identify concerns, explore possible strategies, and share information about supports and resources when needed.

Here are some proactive ways to support your child’s regular attendance:

  • Encourage your child’s engagement at school and praise their efforts.
  • Help your child maintain daily routines such as eating breakfast, turning off electronics two hours before bedtime, and going to bed early.
  • If possible, try to schedule dental and medical appointments after school hours or on days off from school.
  • It may be a concern if your child is often sick, complains about going to school, and/or struggles with schoolwork. Ask for help from the school if you notice your child is struggling to attend.
