Dear students and parents/guardians,
Due to continued growth in Calgary, there is a need to balance enrolment at Calgary Board of Education (CBE) schools. For this reason, elementary school regular program students residing in Belmont will be re-designated to Ethel M. Johnson School.
Effective for the 2025-2026 school year and beyond, kindergarten to Grade 6 regular program students residing in the community of Belmont will be re-designated from Ron Southern School to Ethel M. Johnson School.
- All new kindergarten to Grade 6 regular program registrations for the 2025-2026 school year will be designated to Ethel M. Johnson School.
- Ethel M. Johnson School is located at 255 Sackville Dr. SW
What if my child is currently enrolled at Ron Southern School?
Current kindergarten to Grade 5 students attending Ron Southern School who will be in Grades 1 to 6 for the 2025-2026 school year and reside in Belmont can remain at Ron Southern School until they transition to middle school or can move to Ethel M. Johnson School.
- Students residing in the Belmont community should inform their school principal of their choice to remain at Ron Southern School or transfer to Ethel M Johnson School by Mar. 3, 2025.
- Any current Grade 5 students remaining at Ron Southern School will have access to transportation services from the Belmont community to Ron Southern School for the 2025-2026 school year. Students currently in kindergarten to Grade 4 who choose to remain at Ron Southern will be considered out-of-attendance area students and may apply for transportation as conditional riders. Please see the Busing & Transportation page on the CBE website for details on Conditional Ridership.
- Transportation to eligible riders from Belmont to Ron Southern School will end June 30, 2026, and will not be an option for conditional riders.
- Ron Southern School students with siblings who will be new kindergarten to Grade 6 students in the 2025-2026 school year may transfer to Ethel M. Johnson School to be with their siblings.
Why is this change happening?
The CBE is experiencing record enrolment growth. To address this, changes are being made to balance enrolment across our schools. These changes will help alleviate current and anticipated enrolment pressures in southwest Calgary while keeping students together with their community cohorts from kindergarten to Grade 12.
How do I register for school next year?
Registration for the 2025-2026 school year starts in January 2025. For more information on how to register, please visit our website.
How will students get to school?
Students are eligible for transportation to their designated school if they live beyond the walk zone. Visit Busing & Transportation for important transportation information, and to register for transportation, visit MyCBE once transportation registration is released in mid-May 2025.
